The year 1990 marked the 70th anniversary of the first Group of Seven exhibition at the Art Gallery of Toronto (now the Art Gallery of Ontario). To commemorate this historical anniversary, Talisman Marque Incorporated published two special “Platinum Edition” folios containing lithographic reproductions (26" x 30") of paintings by A.J. Casson.
A.J. Casson’s “Platinum Edition,” offered for sale on this site, includes seven major oil paintings in folio one and seven important watercolours in folio two. These masterworks required as many as thirty-nine hand-mixed colours, individually laid by the Bertone process of screenless colours using special inks which will not fade in sunlight. Each reproduction was produced on high-quality Mirage Vellum White 310GSM, neutral pH, Acid free, 100% rag custom-made paper stock.
All scenes are hand numbered, sealed and titled and hand initialed and approved by A.J. Casson in the lower right margin. In addition, the collection has been fully audited by the firm of P.G. Rayson & Company.
This beautiful collection with an asking price of $22,500 (Canadian) received fair market values of $33,500 and $32,650 in the summer of 1998.

Additional Info on the artist:
Allen Sapp was born in 1928 on the Red Pheasant Reserve near North Battleford, Saskatchewan, a Cree descendant of Chief Poundmaker. He was a frail child, twice suffering life threatening illnesses in his early years. Confined to his home, prevented from attending school and learning to read and write, he amused and expressed himself by teaching himself to draw using simple materials at hand. His Grandmother, "Nokum", encouraged him and prophetically told him, "Keep on drawing - some day you will be very famous".
As an adult he began to painted in a limited palette of brown white and black, selling his work to supplement his welfare payments. These early paintings were of subjects which he felt would appeal to the white man such as mountain landscapes. He received encouragement from Eileen Berryman who owned the hobby shop where he purchased his supplies. It was through her that Dr. Alan Gonor came to know of Sapp's work, becoming Sapp's patron and trusted friend. Dr. Gonor arranged for Sapp to receive instruction from Wynona Mulcaster at the University of Saskatchewan. She recognized his superb gift of observation and encouraged him to paint the way he saw and remembered life on the reserve. This was a turning point in Allen Sapp's life. Successful exhibitions of his work in 1969 and 1970 launched his career.
In the years following, Sapp has exhibited widely across Canada, the U.S. and abroad. He has been the subject of film documentaries produced by the CBC, CTV, STV, and the National Film Board of Canada. Books published about Allen Sapp include, A Cree Life - The Art of Allen Sapp; Two Spirits Soar - The Art of Allen Sapp; The Inspiration of Alan Gonor; Naheyow - A portrait of Allen Sapp and His People; and now, I Heard the Drums.

Animation cel of "Beauty and the Beast"
Beauty and the Beast (330/500)
This is a limited edition of 500 hand-painted character cels from Walt Disney's animated classic Beauty and the Beast (1991). This edition is one of a series of selected limited-edition, hand-painted reproductions of original artwork from Disney animated films.
No original production cels were created in the making of Beauty and the Beast. Thus, Disney artists have recreated the artwork from this feature using traditional animation techniques. The original animation drawings were transferred to acetate "cels" by a special six-step xerographic process. The cels were also enhanced with hand-inked lines. The artists then hand-painted each of the cels in the edition with Disney-approved acrylic colors.
The background scene for this cel has been faithfully reproduced from the original production background, which has been conserved in the Disney Animation Research Library. The resulting artwork has been printed on premium-quality paper by Color Service, Inc., of Monterey Park, California.
The edition, which was published by Disney Art Editions in 1992, consists of a general edition of 500, numbered 1/500 to 500/500, and 25 publisher's proofs, numbered PP1 to PP25. There are no signed cels. This recreated cel set-up is from Sequence 18, Scene 27 of Beauty and the Beast: Belle and the Beast sit on the terrace in the moonlight.
Pinocchio (151/500)
This is a limited-edition of 500 hand painted cel set-ups from Walt Disney's 1940 animated feature film Pinocchio. It is one of a series of selected limited-edition, hand-painted recreations of original artwork from Disney animated films.
Disney artists recreated the artwork from Pinocchio using traditional animation techniques. The original animation drawings were transferred to acetate cels by a special six-step xerographic process. The cels were also enhanced with hand-inked lines. Artists of the Walt Disney Studios Ink and Paint Department then hand painted each of the cels in the edition with Disney-approved acrylic colors.
The background scene accompanying this cel has been faithfully recreated by a Disney background artist, who used original background paintings, sketches, and frames from the film as references. The resulting artwork has been lithographically printed on premium-quality paper by Color Service, Inc. of Monterey Park, California.
The Disney Animation Research Library maintains the original animation drawings and hand-painted background. Conforming to the practice of fine-art printing, the film used to create the background was destroyed when the editon was completed.
Published by Disney Art Editions in 1994, this edition consists of a general edition of 500, numbered 1/500 to 500/500, 50 publisher's proofs, numbered PP 1/50 to PP 50/50, and 25 hors de commerce numbered HC 1/25 to HC 25/25. There are no signed cels. This recreated cel set-up is from Sequence 10.5, Scene 10.1 of Pinocchio: the family is reunited when Pinocchio finally finds Geppetto inside the belly of Monstro.

Statement
"A child and a flower bud are the same. There is a beauty
that is hidden and yet so obvious. My paintings are mental
snapshots of the life around me. When a setting attracts me it
remains fixed in memory long enough for me to get to a sketchpad
and draw it in every detail. My room is full of sketches that
have yet to be put to canvas."
Jose visits Europe every year to immerse himself in the settings
of the impressionists, such as the famous water lily garden of
the French painter Monet. In Spain, he seeks out traditional
houses and quiet gardens. "I love the stucco, the old tiles
of the buildings - these are what inspires me." By talking
his way into private gardens he has discovered "some
magnificent things that way, " he says.
He credits his wife, Leila, an interior and landscape designer,
with setting up many of his still life's. Often she chooses the
colour schemes too. "She does all the work," he says,
"I just paint." Despite his travelling, he often
chooses his own garden (also created by his wife) or his children
as the subjects of his popular paintings.
History
Jose first enjoyed success as a painter in the Philippines. The
Trinidad family emigrated to San Francisco in 1967 and eventually
to Vancouver, B.C. Along the way, Jose studied extensively in
France, Spain, Italy and Switzerland. Travel being his professed
education in art, Trinidad has also found his muse in the gardens
and homes of North America.
The results of this wide-ranging education are oil paintings of entrancing beauty. Joyful colours, vibrant flowers and the uncanny play of sunlight and shadow -- his palette creates a dreamlike world of tranquillity and tenderness.

The wheel is marked as being built by ES BURMAN Co. Chicago and includes the original steering shaft and chain wildcat pulley of naval brass, complete with pillow blocks and bushings. From spoke tip to spoke tip it measures 3 ft. The last boat it was on was a tug boat of Canadian registry built by Mercers in Vancouver BC in 1943. The tug was named Strady 15 and the seller owned it for 10 years. During the ownership she survived one sinking while towing in the Gulf of Georgia and by the accounts of previous owners she had been sunk and raised on two other occasions before he bought her. It is perfectly sound with no breaks or damage. The back is faced with the same cast brass face plate as you see on the front in the picture. During his ownership of the tug it was converted to hydraulic steering and from the picture you may notice the adapter bushing in the hub. It is easily pressed out so the original chain wildcat shaft will fit.

BIOGRAPHY:
Monet, Claude Oscar (1840-1926), French impressionist painter, who brought the study of the transient
effects of natural light to its most refined expression (see IMPRESSIONISM).
Monet was born on November 14, 1840, in Paris, but he spent most of his childhood in Le Havre. There, in
his teens, he studied drawing; he also painted seascapes outside with the French painter Eugene Louis
Boudin. By 1859 Monet had committed himself to a career as an artist and began to spend as much time in
Paris as possible. During the 1860s he was associated with the pre-impressionist painter Edouard Manet,
and with other aspiring French painters destined to form the impressionist school—Camille Pissarro, Pierre
Auguste Renoir, and Alfred Sisley.
Working outside, Monet painted simple landscapes and scenes of contemporary middle-class society, and
he began to have some success at official exhibitions. As his style developed, however, Monet violated one
traditional artistic convention after another in the interest of direct artistic expression. His experiments in
rendering outdoor sunlight with a direct, sketchlike application of bright color became more and more
daring, and he seemed to cut himself off from the possibility of a successful career as a conventional
painter supported by the art establishment.
This painting is typical of the ethereal young women Margaret
Keane painted 40 years ago when living in San Francisco's
Bohemian North Beach where she became known for her commissioned
portraits of celebrities such as Kim Novak, Red Skelton and
Natalie Wood. After two decades in Hawai'i, during which her
paintings of innocent, wide-eyed children and animals became
popular world wide, she now resides in California. Her oils are
owned by National museums, Heads of State and collectors in many
countries. DESCRIPTION:
The first one is dated 20th year of Meiji (1887). There is slight nibbling of six out of
twelfe corners. There is quite a lot of embossing of the white areas of kimono, mica dusting
of the blue background and burnishing of the black haft of the pole arm. There is very slight
off-setting of black on the lower part of the right hand sheet white kimono.
The second one is dated the 22nd year of Meiji (1889). The impression is very good with some
burnishing of the black and some silver metallic printing of the weapon blades (oxidised).
All three sheets have some rounding of the corners, probably caused by rodents when in the
original album form.
Size; each sheet 14 x 9.5 inches, total size per triptych: 28.5 x 14 inches.
In 1874 Monet and his colleagues decided to appeal directly to the public by organizing their own
exhibition. They called themselves independents, but the press soon derisively labeled them impressionists

Letter signed Nelson & Bronte
ALS (autographed letter signed) “Nelson & Bronte”, 1 page, ink on paper and sealed in airtight mounting and frame, written from Nelson’s country house (“dear, dear Merton”) and dated March 17, 1802.
Horatio, Viscount Nelson, KB, Vice-Admiral of the White, Duke of Bronte (September 29, 1758 - October 21, 1805) to Captain Sutton, RN, one of Nelson’s “Band of Brothers”, ordering Captain Sutton to make a wayward young officer a Lieutenant, the first rung up the ladder of promotion, one of the foremost written examples of how favoritism worked in the British Navy of Nelson’s time. The order in the letter was apparently a favour for a shipmate of Captain Sutton’s own father, also a friend of Nelson’s.
Nelson, at this time, was at the height of his career, recently victorious at the Battles of the Nile and Copenhagen (one honour was being created Duke of Bronte), and openly living at Merton with his great love, Emma, Lady Hamilton, and their 14 month old daughter, Horatia. Their time at Merton was very short, however, and in May 1802, Nelson was appointed to command the Mediterranean Fleet, his task to bring the French and Spanish Fleets to action – which he accomplished on October 21, 1805 at the Battle of Trafalgar, England’s greatest sea victory, tarnished only by Nelson’s own death, just when he had been told of his great victory.
This example of Nelson’s correspondence is significant in that it was one of the few remaining examples written from Nelson’s home, Merton. It shows his complete influence in the Navy at this time and illustrates how promotion often took place by favoritism. For Nelson biographers, this document places him at Merton several months before generally assumed (March rather than October, 1802).
Translation
Merton March 17, 1802
My Dear Sutton,
Mr. Tanny is to be made a Lieutenant whenever a promotion takes place. Why he was discharged from the
St. Albans is not very clear but it appears from his own account not very criminal.
If you see no objection, can you enter him in the Amazon as anything on your list. He is recommended by
W. William Parry , late a surgeon in the Navy and an old shipmate of Commodore Sutton.
I will write you this day, ever yours most truly,
Nelson & Bronte

Alessandro Allori (1535-1607), Florentine painter, the pupil and adopted son of Bronzino. An early visit to Rome added the influence of late Michelangelo paintings to that of his master's courtly Mannerism. The Pearl Fishers (Studiolo of Francesco I, Palazzo Vecchio, Florence, c.1570) is generally considered his masterpiece; playful and full of artifice, it combines nude figures obviously drawn from Michelangelo with Bronzino's svelteness and enamelled colouring. He was one of the last notable exponents of Mannerism, painting in a style that had become outmoded by the time of his death.
His son Cristofano (1577-1621) was one of the leading Florentine painters of his period, working in a style that was more naturalistic and Baroque than that of his father. He is remembered primarily for one work, Judith with the Head of Holofernes (c. 1615, Pitti, Florence, and other versions), in which his femme fatale mistress is portrayed as Judith and he has depicted his own features in Holofernes' severed head. In the 18th and 19th centuries it was one of the most famous paintings in Italy. The Ashmolean Museum in Oxford possesses portraits by both Alessandro and Cristofano Allori.

Italian bust of St. Bartholomew
Italian bust (likely Tuscany) bust of St. Bartholomew, 2nd half of the 14th century, 16 1/2" high and 13" wide at the base.
The extremeties of the base have been cutdown - likely due to worm damage, and a new insert of wood also is along bottom of the base.
The bust is in overall good condition:- there is minor flaking and blistering on the front of the cloak, some restoration has been done in head rear hollow right and left hand side lip - refilled and a thin fibreglass mat applied to restore worming (approx. 1" wide by 6" long).
