BIOGRAPHY:

Lillian Irene Hoffar Reid, b. 1908

Born in Vancouver, B.C., the daughter of Lillian and Henry S. Hoffar, 
she studied at the Vancouver School of Art under F.H. Varley 
and C.H. Scott (1925-29) and took post graduate studies at the School 
(1930-31) before travelling to England where she studied at the Royal
Academy Schools of Painting and Sculpture, London, under Monnington and 
Russell (1930-31). Returning to Canada she opened a studio where she did 
portraits, murals and decorative panels. She even decorated interiors of 
yachts. She joined the staff of the Vancouver School of Art as instructor 
in drawing and painting (1933-37). In her portraits one can see the influence 
of F.H. Varley. She was active with the B.C. Society of Artists (1940-67) 
and was president (1965-67); and the Canadian Group of Painters (1959-67), 
President (1958, 1960, 1966-67). Her awards include: Beatrice Stone Medal 
for Black & White Drawing at the B.C. Artists Annual (1940); Canadian 
Centennial Medal awarded for her services rendered to Canada in the arts. Her
solo shows include: Avalles Gallery, Van. (1970); New Westminster Public 
Library (1971); Unitarian Church, Van. (1969); Community Arts Council of 
North Vancouver (1973). She is represented in the Vancouver Art Gallery by 
her portrait entitled "Margaret" and in many private collections 
by her drawings and paintings. Her work has been exhibited, in group
exhibitions in Canada at London, Windsor, Hamilton, Toronto, Montreal, 
Victoria, Vancouver and in the U.S.A. at Seattle. Widowed in 1964, she has 
two daughters, Mrs. R. Gokey and Mrs. H.W. Campbell.
