Emily Carr

Oil on paper, unsigned, bearing the studio stamp of Emily Carr,
16" x 22 1/2", "Victoria Waterfront".

An artist who is closely associated with British Columbia, Canada, is Emily Carr. She began her career at the turn of the century and continued to paint until 1913; however, the lack of encouragement and of financial support resulted in her painting very little in the following fifteen years. In 1927, some of her work was included in a National Gallery exhibition. She travelled east for its opening and met members of the Group of Seven. Seeing their work, and being encouraged by them, especially through a long correspondence with Harris, gave her renewed determination to paint. For the next fourteen years, she refined and expanded her understanding and expression of the spirit of the landscape.
