His first art work, at age ten, was done on the walls of his home. After World War One, he moved to London, England and studied at the St. John's Wood Art School and in Paris. In 1923 he moved to Banff, Alberta and started painting in oil. He found, however, that pastels were more suited to his travels on the prairies. De Grandmaison traveled to reservations all over Canada and the U.S. specializing in portraits of native North Americans. His honors included an associate membership in the Royal Canadian Academy and the Order of Canada.
